While the rest of the world will be celebrating the new year, the “Sherlock” fandom will be celebrating the return of the popular BBC television series. Much to the excitement of fans, “Sherlock” season four is set to air on Jan. 1, 2017.
The return is highly anticipated, as dedicated fans must wait unusually long periods of time between seasons. Not only that, but every season contains only three episodes, each an hour and a half long. It has already been announced that season four’s first and second episodes will be titled “The Six Thatchers” and “The Lying Detective”, while the third episode is yet to be revealed.
For those that are unaware, “Sherlock” is a well-written modern adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. The drama stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as John Watson.
Part of the reason the show has such a positive reputation is because of the fact that the show’s creators and writers, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, along with third writer, Stephen Thompson, all do an excellent job of incorporating the original storylines. However, they still provide their own unexpected twists and suspenseful cliffhangers to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Remarkable character development is also a prominent positive aspect of the writing.
The combination of the impressive plotlines with the stellar acting is what makes “Sherlock” so intriguing.
“‘Sherlock’ has always been known to be full of surprises which is part of the reason why I love the show,” sophomore Isabella Verga, an avid “Sherlock” fan, said. “I think [in] season four the writers have really stepped up that aspect of it to throw the most gut-wrenching and emotional punch they can throw at us yet.”
Since the show first debuted in the summer of 2010, it has only become more popular and attracted more viewers. Although it is filmed in London, the “Sherlock” fan base stretches beyond those borders. Millions of fans from all over the world have become captivated by this present-day interpretation of the famous detective.
Currently, three seasons, plus one additional special episode, have been released. For those that are not caught up with the show, all of these episodes are available to watch on Netflix. There is still time to join in on the excitement before the debut of “Sherlock” season four.
